How do I reduce my home energy bills?

There are many ways to reduce energy bills through plumbing and heating – developing new habits, energy saving devices and efficient appliances are a great place to start. Of course, reducing water and gas use is not only good for your wallet, it’s also better for our planet. We have put together a list of our favourite tips and tricks to save water year round.

Water Saving Tips:

  • Tap aerators: These devices screw onto the end of your tap and mix air with the water. They decrease water use by reducing flow rate without sacrificing water pressure.

  • Water-saving dishwashers, dryers and washing machines: Look for Energy Star certified dishwashers with features like half-load cycles and sensors that adjust water usage based on load size. Where possible, operate your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.

  • Low-flow showerheads: These reduce water flow without sacrificing water pressure. Reducing shower time also saves both water and energy.

  • Water-efficient toilets: Look for toilets with a high Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) rating. A higher rating indicates lower water usage per flush. Consider dual-flush toilets with two flush options: a full flush and a half flush.

  • Fix leaks promptly: Even a small leak can waste a lot of water over time.

  • Smart irrigation controllers: These devices automatically adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions, soil moisture, and plant needs. Collecting rainwater for gardening is a great way to reduce reliance on tap water.

Energy saving tips:

  • Energy-efficient appliances: When replacing appliances, choose energy-efficient models with high Energy Star ratings.

  • Consider a smart thermostat: A smart thermostat can automatically adjust your home's temperature to save energy.

  • Service gas appliances regularly: Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and energy efficiency.

  • Insulate pipes: Insulating hot water pipes reduces heat loss and saves energy.

  • Lower hot water temperature: Set your water heater to a lower temperature to conserve energy.

  • Use energy-efficient lighting: Switch to LED bulbs, which consume less energy and last longer.

  • Clean your appliances: Cleaning filters on heaters and dryers helps them run more efficiently.

Additional Tips:

  • Check for leaks: Regularly inspect your plumbing system for leaks and fix them promptly.

  • Install a water meter: A water meter can help you monitor your water usage and identify areas for conservation.

  • Use a pressure regulator: A pressure regulator can reduce water pressure, saving water and energy.

By implementing these tips, you can significantly reduce your energy and water consumption, leading to lower utility bills and a smaller environmental footprint. Let us know what you would add to this list!
